GIESBRECHT: “Screw the west, we’ll take the rest”

    Brian GiesbrechtJuly 3, 2020

    Blair Gable / Reuters
Liberal organizer Keith Davey, during a 1980 election, coined the slogan “Screw the west, we’ll take the rest”. The election brought back Pierre Trudeau and his government installed the notorious National Energy Program (NEP). NEP damaged Alberta and the oil-rich west, bringing in the infamous bumper stickers: “Let the eastern bastards freeze in the dark”. Trudeau damaged more than the western economy with his cynical legislation – he seriously aggravated a longstanding suspicion in the west that the Liberal Party was more vampire than friend.

Pierre’s son is doing it again with Bill C-69. This legislation, meant to replace the then National Energy Board (NEB), adds to the existing mountain of regulations (and other obstacles) that stand in the way of oil and gas pipelines and other vital energy projects. Environmental and Indigenous “duty to consult” requirements – already onerous – will become almost impossible to meet.

But it gets worse. While the NEP was an assault on Alberta governments and taxpayers, it was not an attempt to destroy an entire industry. Bill C-69 is. The feeling is strong in the west that the Liberal Party’s extreme ideology – that the oil and gas industry must be shut down to save the world – is the real reason for C-69. Murdering the fossil fuel industry by federal legislation would cripple western Canada’s tottery economic recovery.

And worse: C-69 is also a direct assault on fundamental property rights.

The Canadian Association of Energy and Pipeline Landowners Association (CAEPLA) – Canada’s leading national grassroots property organization advocating on behalf of farmers, ranchers, and other rural landowners – promotes property rights. CAEPLA reports that under C-69, federal government inspectors would bring along “Indigenous Monitors” onto private land and without the landowner’s approval.

ERRANT CYCLISTS: Cops say education instead of enforcement

“Indigenous Monitors” could decide that something on a farmer’s land is archaeologically valuable to them. Through C-69, they also have the right to perform “cultural ceremonies” without the landowner’s approval. Landowners with a federally regulated energy project located on their land could find their land part of the federal government’s “Reconciliation Agenda”. “Reconciliation” sounds nice, but not if the ultimate goal of Bill C-69 is expropriation. Astoundingly this is unveiling in secret.

This secret assault on property rights should not surprise those following the current federal government’s indigenous initiatives. For example, the recent deal with unelected people, who call themselves “Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs”, is secret. Thousands of town and rural landowners might soon be horrified to find that they don’t own land (perhaps with houses, farms, and businesses) that were bought and paid for years ago, Why? Because the government chooses to call what they thought theirs to be “Wet’suwet’en land”.

The current federal government has also introduced a “Practice Directive” that prevents federal lawyers from even defending the approximately 45,000 outstanding Indigenous claims – that is if a proper defence would interfere with…..yes, there’s that “reconciliation” word again. Or, should it be spelled $Reconciliation$? And if you think that the federal government will be on the landowner’s side, think again!

C-69 is not only bad legislation; it is an unconscionable interference with property rights. If the federal government plans to change fundamental property rights it should do so openly, and give every citizen an opportunity to participate in what is in reality a constitutional debate.

Prime Minister G. Butts, is unconscionable,,, it's unreal how Canada is being usurped, and destroyed from within. And Junior hates the West too, but he doesn't have a brain like the ol' man,,, I'm sure he gets stoned every night, after he learns his lines for next morning's reality tv show.
The Trudeau administration has fully embraced globalism and will use bigoted and racist programs to try reconciliation. Reconciliation cannot be successful without forgiveness and moving forward,,, "burring the hatchet", as was once a mainstream saying.

Is it true that the arrival of the English and French brought an end to the slavery practices of North American Indians among each others tribes/bands?
The Colonial Settlers should be praised for breaking up the practice of slavery among Natives.

I said from day one when Justine got in that the liberals would drive western Canada into near poverty.
Which is crazy considering this part of Canada was actually a wealth creator for the rest of Canada. But the liberal arrogance and ignorance to economics is astounding .

Western Canada was getting too c*cky, and getting ideas of having some power in this country,,, Trudeau and the Laurentians had to put an end to that. Heck, immigrants even wanted to come to western Canada because the jobs were here,,, that had to end.

          Death by a thousand cuts.
While we attempt to piecemeal fight each individual battle, exhausting our human resources, and wasting valuable time, we could solve them all at once by simply separating. It is the only solution. We can't continue to try to fight every one of these attacks on our resources and sovereignty, it will be never ending whack-a-mole.

Times are tough on the farm for sure, but there is always a new pickup truck. Stole that from Big Daddy Taz farmboy turned comedian.

"Young people should DEFINITELY go into farming; it teaches the value of hard work and self worth. Every year we make no money but still there's always a new truck.

If more young people got into farming, they'd learn perseverance and self reliance through the toughest of times. Not once has a farmer ever called in the army to dig him out of the snow!"

Just curious what does your post have to do with the initial posted article? Did you put too much baileys in your coffee this morning Chuck? One other question you had nothing to say about Michael Shellenberger, was that because what he said was correct? Vaclav Smil certainly would agree with Michael S.

You see Hamloc, this is just one of the many benefits of being the smartest guy in the room, never being wrong, and having earned the right to speak down to the uninformed masses from his position of moral authority. There is no need to read, listen, or even attempt to understand the other side before knowing exactly what they think, and why it is wrong. The rest of us can only watch with awe, knowing that we will never even be able to aspire to such all knowing, all seeing wisdom.

Farmers, always complaining about the weather, the markets, the politicians, the grain companies, the fertilizer companies, the seed companies, the eastern bastards, the farm organizations..... etc

Its so bad out here on our grand farms, but there is still a new pickup? Get it? Times are tough! The neighbors only have 1 pontoon boat, a nice camper and several millions tied up in land and machinery. But they are broke! Haha And it's all Trudeaus fault!

And western Canada is broke too. LOL We can barely afford to mount a separatist campaign or a "war room" against the environmentalists! It has nothing to do with the world price of oil?

The New Truck? One of Chucks neighbors must have picked up a new truck and Chuck has a pout on!

The socialist mind at work. If we all drive old trucks we are all happy but when one in the group gets a new one and the rest of have old one? Envy and resentment!!!

Damn it Chuck I must be doing something wrong my main farm pick up is a 2008 GMC. But much to my amusement still no response on Shellenberger, not surprised, my guess is that it is hard to refute the truth. The unfortunate part is most environmentalists(you included)continue to refuse to acknowledge that renewables are not the answer, very sad and narrow minded in my opinion.

Now you've gone and done it, now I am bitter and jealous of your success, my main farm truck is a compact car. Although we do have an 08 ford 1/2 ton for the odd job that the car can't handle. It's not looking so great these days, since my hired help ran the harrows all down the side of it this spring.
